FAQs

How does Billhop work?

Billhop is an online payment service that lets you pay your bills using the debit or credit card of your choice.

We don't require your end recipient or supplier to accept card payments or sign up to our service themselves. This means that a Billhop account lets you use your credit cards to pay bills that don't typically accept cards as payment.

Simply add your bill details, register a card and confirm the payment date. Your credit card will be charged and the funds will arrive in your recipient's account in 2-4 business days (depending on your card).

When will HMRC receive my payment?

HMRC will recieve payments made on Visa, Mastercard or Diners cards within 2 business days, while American Express requires up to 4 business days.

Please note that weekends and bank holidays are considered non-business days and should be accounted for in your planning.

Can I make several separate payments to HMRC?

Of course! You can make as many separate payments as you want, as long as they are in line with HMRC's requirements.

What details do I need to pay HMRC?

Certain details are always required in order to make payments to HMRC.

  • The HMRC account number and sort code (specifies where the payment should go)
  • Your reference number (tells HMRC who has sent the payment)

HMRC Accounts & Sort Codes

HMRC has two different accounts that your tax can be paid into. Your bill will tell you which account to pay in to. If you do not have a bill, or you’re not sure, HMRC recommends using HMRC Cumbernauld.

HMRC Cumbernauld - Account number: 12001039 / Sort Code: 08 32 10

HMRC Shipley - Account number: 12001020 / Sort Code: 08 32 10

Please note: If you are paying Class 2 National Insurance (if you do not pay through Self Assessment) then you will need a different account. This can be found on your slip.

Reference Numbers

You reference number is found on your paying in slip or in you online HMRC account.

Self Assesment: this is your 10-number Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) followed by the letter K (ex: 1234567891K). You must remember to add the "K" to the end of the 10 digits.

Corporation tax: this is your 17-character payslip reference for the accounting period you’re paying.

Which credit cards can I use with Billhop?

You can use any Visa, Mastercard, Diners Club or American Express card, just like you would any online purchase.

It's worth noting that American Express may require direct approval if you plan to make a particularly large payment that deviates from your normal spending patterns. If a payment is initially declined, it is important that you contact their customer service directly.
